Mandaluyong City Operation Compassion Philippines (OCP) successfully conducted an Adoption Telling Session at the International Baptist Church in Mandaluyong City, gathering 31 prospective adoptive parents, foster parents, and members of the OCP Support Group for a focused capacity-building event.

The session aimed to strengthen the participants’ knowledge and confidence in discussing adoption with their children, particularly through a deeper understanding of the 7 Core Issues of Adoption: loss, rejection, guilt and shame, grief, identity, intimacy, and mastery/control. These core concepts provided the framework for discussions on how adoption impacts both children and parents across various stages of life.

The participants received practical guidance on age-appropriate communication, creating a supportive environment during adoption conversations, and ensuring the emotional safety of children when navigating sensitive topics. The session also highlighted the common challenges faced by adoptive and foster parents, which include timing their disclosure, responding to difficult questions about birth families, and managing their own emotional readiness.

Moreover, the event also employed a combination of lecture inputs, interactive sharing, and facilitator-led reflections. The attendees were encouraged to share their experiences and concerns in order to foster a supportive learning environment and strengthen community bonds among adoptive and foster families.

By the end of the session, the participants altogether reported a greater awareness of adoption-related issues, improved skills for facilitating adoption telling, and increased confidence drawn from shared experiences within the group.

OCP continues to implement capacity-building activities as part of its commitment to supporting adoptive and foster families and promoting family-based care for children in need of special protection.
